Annie Mills, LVT, VTS (Dentistry) Annie Mills, LVT, VTS (Dentistry) Kudos to both of you! CE is a must with any discipline of veterinary medicine, but especially dentistry. Primarily because we are still in the learning and growing phase with regards to dentistry in the general practice. I love to see techs take such an active role in the whole process from client education to marketing to grow your practice. Radiology is such a crucial part of the dental procedure-it is always rewarding to see practices who have never taken dental radiographs learn so much within the first week of implementing it into their practice. It's an eye opener to learn you didn't know what you didn't know, and what you were missing.

Annie Mills, LVT, VTS (Dentistry) Annie Mills, LVT, VTS (Dentistry) How are you improving your role in dentistry?
For many years, veterinary dentistry was primarily a "technician task" with minimum involvement by the veterinarian. The field of dentistry, through education, and the need for improved patient care, is rapidly changing throughout the veterinary community. Veterinarians are learning more advanced therapies and applying them in everyday practice. The technician's role is changing as well. The veterinarian and technician are becoming (or should be) a cohesive team in performing dentistry.

It's important that we define these roles within the team in accordance with what is appropriate for each team member, as well as, what is most cost effective in providing the best patient care.

How is your practice defining these roles as far as radiology, probing and charting, providing pain management, etc.? As a technician, how are you improving your role with regards to dentistry?

We recently added dental radiography and it is a whole new world. I cannot believe how much there is to learn for both me and my veterinarian. It seems like every radiograph I take inspires more questions! We are all headed for more CE.

While working in practice veterinary dentistry was one of my favorite areas! I was fortunate to work in a place where CE was encouraged and paid for to help promote our growth in the veterinary field.

Having the appropriate training combined with open communication between veterinarians and technicians made dentistry rewarding for me and the animals we provided this service to. Not only was I a part of the process, I maintained logs of all of our dental equipment/servicing and formulated dental charts and handouts to educate our owners and staff. Our practice also promoted dental month with posters/materials designed to educate owners on the importance of dental care.
